The incredible sport of power soccer took center stage this past weekend at the SpoFit for the 2014 PowerBlast tournament.
Seven teams participated in the tournament for a chance to showcase this electric wheelchair sport to fans in the Valley, including five from Arizona and the RHI Sudden Impact from Indiana and the SoCal Vaqueros from California. The event ran all weekend and the athletes definitely put on an excellent show.
The Sun Devil Power Soccer Club showed why they are one of the best teams in the country, going undefeated during the PowerBlast tournament and taking 1st place in Pool A. Along with taking the top spot, Sun Devil athlete Jordan Dickey took home Pool A MVP. While the Sun Devils showcased the incredible skill and strategy of the USPSA's Premier Conference, many who attended couldn't help but take notice of Arizona Heat Destroyers athlete Joshua Harrott.
Harrott has only been playing power soccer for a few months, but he's already shown amazing ball handling skills and court leadership during his first official tournament. In probably the most thrilling match of the weekend, Harrott scored four goals against the SpoFit Spark, including the go-ahead goal with only seconds left in the game. It didn't take long for everyone to see that Harrott has a bright future ahead in power soccer as he earned Pool B MVP.
From the athletes to the fans, everyone who attended this year's tournament enjoyed the festivities and matches. Power Soccer is an amazing sport for people with disabilities and it looks like it will continue to grow in the Valley. If you missed PowerBlast this year, you can still catch some power soccer matches in person this June 26-28 as the Sun Devil Power Soccer Club competes in the 2014 USPSA Premier Conference Cup.
